Octopus Escape!

Another great day in paradise on earth.

Benjamin and Noah found an octopus while they were snorkeling in the ocean. It was pretty wild to get to see an octopus close up and be able to get pictures and video of it. It will certainly be fun to go back and look at pictures of an octopus that we had caught, but it will be even more fun to watch the video that’s below years from now!

The boys caught this octopus in the Gulf of Mexico along the coast of Panama City Beach. The octopus squirted water on me with his jet propulsion apparati, but I was not prepared for what he'd do next. His creepy walking was just too much for me. It was fun to study him for a bit before releasing him back into his gulf home. We think he may have been a CARIBBEAN ARMSTRIPE OR BROWNSTRIPE OCTOPUS (OCTOPUS BURRYI

I just love the hands-on science lessons we enjoy.

Another pic of the octopus. To give some perspective, the bottom of this bucket is about 14" in diameter.

Kate and I are fairly well known as the "drinkers" in our family so we scheduled a challenge at high noon today. It ended up being a pretty mild contest and I stopped drinking so Kate could recompose herself, so although it may have been a tie…I think I won. Rumor has it that we’ll do a rematch tomorrow afternoon with straws.
