To commemorate this anniversary I am posting pictures from our trip to Pearl Harbor on April 22, 2008. Photos were taken by Kate.
Noah as a sailor
The USS Missouri-where the peace treaty between the USA and the Japanese was signed.
“Pearl Harbor”
An anchor recovered from the hulk of the USS Arizona.
Noah testing out a periscope
As a matter of fact…
Benjamin aiming for Japanese “Kate” Bombers
A 3”/50 anti-aircraft gun used on submarines.
“Kaiten-One Man Japanese Suicide Torpedo. First used in 1944.” The suicide driver would actually get inside of the torpedo and steer it into the enemy.
Taking an audio self-guided tour through the submarine museum.
Then we toured the USS Bowfin Hmm…it’s flying a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.
Torpedoes are loaded into this hole.
This ships mess looks better than our kitchen after it’s been cleaned up!
One of the sleeping quarters
Couldn’t really get my brother’s attention to look at the camera. These opening can become water-tight-I believe that when the ship is compartmentalized the spread of water to do a leak can be easily stopped.
An engine room
We made it from one end of the ship to the other and then headed back up to the deck.
Views from the deck
The memorial for the many lives lost on the USS Arizona. We didn’t have the chance to visit the memorial due to crowds, but we did visit it on our last trip in 2002. It’s certainly a sobering experience to watch WWII veterans come to the memorial and pay their respects to their fallen comrades.
