October 30, 2013 – We’re in North Carolina once again for the “Worship of God” conference hosted by the NCFIC. A lot of families from our area and church were also going to the conference, so we all left a day early to go on a hike together. We did this last year, but I’m SO FAR BEHIND on this blog – that I don’t think I’ve posted it yet!
There are some gorgeous waterfalls in the area, and our first stop took us to a beautifully-isolated trail of of a winding road tucked in the hills of North Carolina.
[Cue “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver]
Giving a quick brief before we hit the trail…
…and possibly doing a precautionary headcount?
Bryce “warms up” his grin for the cameras
It looks like I’m not the only one who caught that grin
And off we go!
[Cue superhero music]
After a short hike we arrive at the waterfall…
The boys head onto the unbeaten path
[Cue trailblazing music]
This is the view of the falls from on top.
After checking out the stream at the top of the waterfall, we headed back down to the bottom…
…but only one of us defied death on the way.
I overheard someone quoting Psalm 1:20 as we watched him come down.
Matthew takes a photo of an inchworm on Andres’ finger.
Helping him down the hill.
What have we here?
A good ole’ crawdad! (A called a “crayfish” for all you educated folks.)
(For the very edu-ma-cated folks: This crayfish was probably in the “cambaridae” family.)
[Cue “The Crawdad Song” by Andy Griffith] – we ARE in NC after all.
I’ve probably lost all of my educated readers after recommending a song like that. ^
Ben found something too!
“Hey Melanie, those rocks look sharp.”
Why the red socks? Let’s put it in context::
We were currently in the middle of a World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox. Guess who the guy above is rooting for.
“People helping people”
[Cue friends-helping-friends music]
WARNING: The following sentence contains sarcasm. Read with discretion.
So, after everyone else left the waterfall and did something boring like…
…find an old abandoned mica mine filled with water…and watch Ben swim into it…
…I got these much-more-exciting photos:
Just one of the many pieces of mica that littered the ground.
[Cue “My Tree” by Chris Rice]
“Ancient” Ruins
(What was it originally? I have no idea.)
We start the hike back to our cars so we can head to the next waterfall.
I can’t…
…keep up.
Whew, almost left me behind.
Keep an eye out for Part II!
