D-Day @ Imax, #SherlockLives, King Louis

August 29, 2014 – This afternoon we met friends at the St. Louis Science Center to watch a film on D-Day in the enormous Imax theatre.

The film was amazing and I would highly recommend it.  It offered a big picture perspective of the planning, execution, and strategic importance of D-Day.  The motion graphics and aerial footage in and around Normandy was absolutely breathtaking on the screen of the Imax:

Mark your calendars!  A Sherlock Holmes exhibit will be coming to the Science Center this fall, and we’re definitely planning on going!

Most of our family are fans of Sherlock after reading the Doyle’s books and seeing the stories portrayed on television from Ronald Howard, Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

This red telephone booth is a reference to the iconic booth near St. Bart’s Hospital where Sherlock Holmes staged his death in the “Sherlock” BBC TV Series.  The real telephone booth at St. Bart’s has become a landmark for Sherlock fans and messages are posted on the phone booth all the time.

Following the film, we had a picnic in Forest Park:

An Independence Day “Ship’s Cook”(Video)

July 4th, 2014 -  I know that many of you have enjoyed the nearly-90 dancing videos that I’ve posted on this blog over the years…so I hope you enjoy the one below!

Unfortunately, my camera didn’t capture some of the guys doing some epic breakdancing “helicopters” off-screen during the gentleman’s “turn.”

Ship's Cook-Dance

This dance was performed in BBC's 2009 film, "Emma." The video below is of Ship's Cook being performed in a much larger group...do any of the faces look familiar?

Filming with Stephen Littman

We got together with some friends to make a short video together that would incorporate a few self defense techniques we’d learned and would make a promotional piece for Whole Armour Martial Arts.

“Behind the Scenes” footage can be seen here: Short Video Shoot

P.S. Re: "Lydia”  I’m gathering the photos from the North Carolina trip, so I’ll be posting some photos from the spoons game this week!

Short Video Shoot

12-9-28-6  We were invited to help film a short video Stephen Littman was filming with the rest of his crew.

Benjamin played the lead in a crime scene and a short fighting scene that I was also in.

I should be able to post a link to the video fairly soon, but until then take a look at the behind-the-scenes video below: 12-9-28-512-9-28-3

2016

facebook-TimelineHero-TEASER

On this Labor Day we went to the Hi-Pointe Theatre to watch the new film, “2016.”  If you haven’t heard about it, no, it isn’t a remake of the apocalyptic “2012.”

This film follows Dinesh D’Souza as he retraces Obama’s early life as described in his own words.  He learns what an impact Barak Sr. had upon his son, even though they hardly had any kind of a relationship.

I thought this film was very helpful in helping to understand some aspects of Obama’s ideologies and goals during his presidency.  I’ve done some study on the common worldviews of American culture at large, but sometimes I was just confused when I saw what decisions Obama was making.  During the course of this movie, the pieces begin to fall together as you see how the ideas of his father influenced him while he was young and matured when he was placed under the mentorship of a communist.

Don’t want to spoil anything yet, so go watch the movie for yourself!

I’m pretty sure I could write more, but I’ll move ahead with the pictures:

2016-4

After leaving the theatre we ate some pizza with friends and discussed the ideas set forth in the film we’d just seen.

Sons of Georgia

On Saturday we attended the premiere of “Sons of Georgia,” a Civil War made here in St. Louis by homeschoolers. The filming of the video was beautiful, the story was touching and there was also a good bit of humor.

I did the filming for the premiere event and edited the video above.

Fight Scene Test–Video

The other night we tried filming a fight sequence to see how it’d turn out.  We’d done similar things in the past (see below), but they always turned out extremely chees-y.  This new video actually turned out better than expected considering we only did one take and used only one camera.

The first shot is a quick fight sequence Ben and I threw together…we really messed it up and Ben forgot his next move halfway through, but the first part didn’t look too bad.

The next shots show a few self-defense moves we’ve learned in our mixed martial arts class.  Please don’t pay too close attention to the actual moves…this was for filming purposes only!

Nevertheless, we were encouraged with how the video turned out and hope to do a few more filming tests in the coming weeks.

Now, here’s a video from a long time ago!  It’s called “Brotherly Love” and was filmed in 2007.

Courageous

banner
We’ve watched the newest Sherwood Pictures film, Courageous, in theatres a couple of times since it came out last Friday.  It’s a fantastic movie about how important fatherhood is to a child’s future.
They did a fantastic job of showing how the root of much criminal activity is fatherlessness, but they take it a step farther and illustrate how a Christian father takes the wheel and guides his family.   They covered so many topics like dating, unemployment, death and the grieving process, forgiving your failed father, integrity in the workplace, drugs and crime, friendship, divorce, etc.
There were also a lot of laughs in this films-even more laughs than their past films and there are also some times when it’s great to have tissues nearby.
I think that this movie was absolutely fantastic, but it also has a significance to me when I look at what I’ve experienced in the last few years.   While my Dad was out of work for months on end we really had to trust God for provision that was shown in the film when their house is on the line.  In the film one of the main characters experiences the tragic death of a family member and how he struggles with regrets and lost visions of the future.  Maybe to those who haven’t experienced much death the grieving may have seemed a bit odd, but this is the process that we had to go through when our Dad died last fall.  Forgiving a failed father was also a key lesson to not use fatherlessness as a crutch for mediocrity.
Anyways, it’s a great movie and I highly recommend seeing this film as soon as you can!

Setting Up for An Interview

The day after the CHEF Conference we had to film an interview for the Liberty & Property DVD I am working on with Mr. Ford. Doug Phillips was already in town so he came over and interviewed Mr. Ford.  My brothers were a big help with helping to setup the lights and controlling the cameras.

Last week we went back and filmed some more footage with Mr. Ford.  It was a very long day for both he and me and it was a 10 hour day of writing, filming under the hot lights and sequencing.

Cars 2

cars2-non crop

Last night we very spontaneously were able to get a couple of free tickets for the theatre so we watched Cars 2.  It’s a pretty action packed movie…they have cars in spy movies so why not put spy into Cars?

However, we were disappointed for the very obvious and overbearing environmentalism of the film. Yes, the bad guys of the film were the head of an oil company and all of his henchmen. It was also interesting to see how in the film the World came together to show what alternative fuel could do.

I guess the moral of the story was typical…be who you are no matter what and if other people have a problem with that they need to change.

69th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Attack-Video

.

It was 11pm on December 7th when I had the idea to make a quick video commemorating the 69th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor by using the footage from the Tora! Tora! Tora! presentation at the air show we attended earlier this fall. I stayed up until 2am downloading and editing some pubic domain files for the video. By noon the next morning I finished editing it.
