New Kitchen Sink

 

  We had a late start today because we arrived so late at home last night.

   We had to pick up some plumbing supplies at the hardware store and then came back and replaced the kitchen faucet.

The Cabinet Gets a New Floor Too!

 

The rotten particle board that had served as the floor of the cabinet was moldy and deteriorated. It was a smelly job, but Glenn got on a mask and started pulling out the floor.  Thankfully the underlayment beneath the particle board wasn’t moldy and looked to be in good shape.

 

 

Mom picked up some paint to use in the laundry room-it was surprise when we saw that it was the color of a pomegranate! We’d never painted the laundry/pantry since we’ve been living here and the red color really brightened up the room.

We’ll also paint behind the shelves                              I think that we’ll use this same color for the hallway bathroom

Glenn cut a base for the plywood to sit on.

However, getting the plywood into the cabinet was a difficult challenge that required un-wiring the garbage disposal,

cutting the drain pipe and removing the front board. Finally we got the plywood inside and screwed into the base. It was pretty late before we got the job done (past midnight) and we’ll have to pick up plumbing supplies before we can re-attach the drain and start using the kitchen sink again.

We’ll paint the plywood to match the other cabinet’s floors and put some trim on the front edge.

Now that we have a good, solid foundation in the cabinet we’ll have to either replace the kitchen faucet or just replace the o-rings and the gasket where the water is leaking from.

Mortar Mess, Shoe for Trim and Leak in the Kitchen Sink

We started mopping the floor a little bit and using some special haze remover solution, but the tiles still look they are covered my mortar and look dull. We’ve been contacting the installers because they were supposed to clean the floors before they left. I’m not sure how or when it will be resolved.

Mom picked up some more trim boards that are called the “shoe” and will cover where the 1x4 meets the floor. They were already primed so I had to put a coat of paint on that,

There was a “leak under the kitchen sink” (that seems to be a bit of a cliché) and the flooring inside of the cabinet had become wet and has collapsed. We’ll have to replace the floor with some new plywood before we can fix the leak.

 

 

Floor’s Finished!

 

The work on our new flooring was finished this morning! The house looks so different!

Hallway Bathroom

 

Monday: The backer board was cut for the entire work area. There was a problem w had to resolve with the installers about sealing the grout, so that stalled progress a bit. Supplies were carried inside and we took out the squeaks in the subfloor.

Tuesday: The backer board was fastened to the subfloor with nails and adhesive. They had set the tile in the living room, kitchen and laundry room.

Wednesday: The tile in the hallway bathroom, the front entry and also the hallway was set. The tile they had set on Tuesday was grouted.

Thursday: They grouted the hallway, bathroom and entry and also installed thresholds for the doorways and stairs. Installed additional small tile in bathroom. Packed up their tools and left before noon.

Preparing to paint trim

It was a creative challenge to navigate through the house without stepping on mortar or grout that had to dry. While the installers were working in the hallway the 3 of us couldn’t get to our bedrooms, so we had to come up with some creative solutions so we could climb through the windows!   It looks like we’re practicing our fire drills.

Noah and I started getting sick yesterday and today we feel a lot worse. I spent the majority of the day in bed.

Tomorrow we’ll be moving in some of the lighter pieces of furniture and laying down the baseboards. We’re hoping that on Saturday we’ll be able to move in the appliances, so we can cook a meal again! We’re going to use the left over tile, mortar and grout to put the same flooring into the back bathroom ourselves. It’s very small, so it shouldn’t be too much work.

Ronda started working on the hallway bathroom and the back bathroom.

In the back bathroom she stripped off the old, peeling paint and repairing the walls with drywall mud. The walls in the hallway bathroom were really messed up too, so she used some joint compound to fix the holes and dents.
