Storm in the Tropics

September 21, 2013 - A fantastically strong storm burst upon us this Saturday afternoon.  The suddenness with which the winds and rain are very apparent when you’re right on the beach and can feel the full impact of the storm.

Guess who also got caught out in the storm (on their bikes)?

Winds, Rain, & Waves

September 17, 2013- Constitution Day!  Today and yesterday we had some pretty good storms blow in from the gulf.  The winds and rain are so much stronger when you’re right on the coast, so the storms were a lot of fun to watch.

Red Flag = Good time to get in the water!

After the rain blew over, the waves were absolutely enormous and were a lot of fun, though at times a little scary.  We waded out to the waves with our body boards and would ride the crests of the waves back to shore.

St. Louis Tornado

When the last really bad storm came swept through St. Louis that damaged areas of St. Charles, we were eating dinner at a restaurant.  I took a few photos out of the window from the booth.

It became very dark

Then the heavy rain and strong winds came

The restaurant evacuated customers from their seats to the kitchen area as it was the safest part of the building

I thought it was very ironic that we were seated next to this film poster!

Storm Damage II

IMG_1515   Last Tuesday we our area had severe storms that included tornados and large hail.  Friends just across town had egg-sized hail that damaged their cars and make it sound like the roof was going to collapse.

Tuesday night we were driving back home from Cincinnati when we got caught in the storm and had to exit the highway and wait out the storm.  The rain came in torrents and there was some hail as well.  After about 2 1/2 hours of waiting we decided we needed to get closer towards home and got back onto the highway.  It was 2am before we made it home after battling wet roads and heavy rain.

You may remember that just a few weeks ago a branch fell on our deck and ripped the canopy. Well, on Wednesday we found that another branch had fallen on top of, but not through, the canopy.

Oh yeah, just as an update, Benjamin' has now pumped well over 150 gallons of water from our basement!

Swimming in a Storm

IMG_1790

It was pretty stormy today and the wind was very strong. The waves were very strong and the beach was placed under “High Hazard” for swimming.

So…

some of us stayed snuggled up indoors where it was dry and warm:

-but later in the afternoon we ventured out into the water.

Whenever you’d first run down to the water and get your feet wet it felt like ice cubes, but we got used to the water, stayed out of the wind and kept on moving for warmth. We had a fantastic time swimming in such high waves. We’d take an inflatable ring far out into the water and hop on. When the next wave broke we’d be sent speeding to the shore and could would land on the beach-all in one wave!

A started to rain and we could see a large storm starting to blow in, so we rinsed off and came inside for the day.
