Haha, BTW, this is random but are you & your brothers planning on wearing KILTS at the ball in June? (haha, my brothers say they'll never ever be caught dead in skirts (which are what they call kilts)... ^_^ Haha)
Haha, just had this discussion with the Thomas brothers yesterday. My brothers have been calling kilts "skirts" too. Benjamin says that while with a partner in a dance he's not going to be curtseying too. For my part, I say kudos to the guys who are going to be wearing them, but I'm not "brave" enough to try it =). We picked up the material last week for colonial costumes. Hope to see everyone at the dance this Friday! Andrew
We think Nick Burns did an AMAZING job on this video, way better than last year even! Doesn't it make you want to go to the Conference?! The music is good too. What's ironic, is: we started listening to a Scottish CD we had recently gotten the week before this video came up on the CHEF site, especially the first track (Highland Cathedral)....and lo and behold! it was the exact SAME piece of music that Nick used for the video. (Same musicians and recording, too.) Scottish music is fun! Oh...kilts. Actually, if you discuss the topic long enough with certain people (like the Burns), you get to thinking: kilts are quite manly, even. When worn with the whole outfit. Coat, weapons, etc. Besides....traditionally, girls wouldn't wear skirts as short as kilts: they wore plain, long and full skirts. So it makes it simple.
Yes- Matthew T. mentioned he'd be playing bagpipes at the Conference. We are really looking forward to that!
That's good that you are making colonial costumes. The outfit I have is both ''Scottish'' and ''Colonial''. :)
Yes, he did do a great job on the video and that's quite providential about the music! Oh, I agree, kilts are definitely manly, but I'm not "brave" enough to get pass the cultural distortions to wear one. I'll probably end up regretting it, but for this year I'll be happy to wear my colonial outfit :). Yes, Matthew's been practicing his bag pipes and taking lessons, but I just heard Sunday that the whole Thomas family will be coming to the conference and playing the fife and drum. (see the photo I added to the CHEF Conference post) Andrew
I understand what you mean about the kilts. I don't think Sam is opposed to the idea of it now, because we had a good discussion with Peter Burns, and because Matthew will also be. :) Besides....we're Scottish. :) So it's easier, and makes sense.
Yes- I heard that all the Thomases will be coming. We are really looking forward to meeting them and hearing them!
Ah, well ancestry may be part of it. As far back as I've gone in genealogical research, I've only found English blood on my Mother's side and it's safe to say that my Father's ancestors never wore kilts in Shanghai! Sam certainly won't be alone if he wears a kilt-I know up to 6 boys that will be wearing one. Can't wait for Friday night! Andrew
