Mom & Noah had a pleasant visit with our neighbor, Mrs. Myra Auzat (the "au is pronounced like a long "o") in Crystal City on Sunday. Mrs. Auzat will be 97 yrs. old later this year...though one wouldn't know it to meet and converse with her. She is recovering at a rehab facility from a recent diagnosis of pneumonia. She seems to be getting stronger and is walking again. She told us stories about growing up in Crystal City as a little girl. She remembers the Mississippi River freezing over during the winter and folks even ice skating on there. (We've heard this from others who grew up there in that time era too). She told us about her father's business there....Deluxe Grocery and Department Store in Crystal City. She said the grocery was on the first floor with the department store upstairs. She remembers seeing the upper windows decorated for the holidays and how beautiful it was. Her dad also worked as the butcher at the grocery. She got to spend evenings there sometimes. She was an only girl with one older brother and two younger brothers. Amazingly enough, she told us that her older brother came up to see her too! He's nearing 100. It's so delightful to hear from his generation about life here so long ago, especially right here in our local area. What a blessing to get to visit with her.

I would never have guessed that she was that old. :)
We also enjoy talking with elderly people and hearing about their lives....and also hearing about how the world was when they were young! It's so important to remember the stories from the early 1900s! :) I was kind of disappointed recently when I realized that when I'm a grandmother I won't have any interesting 1900's tales to tell my grandkiddies. Haha. Too bad. :( Not that I want another war....

Yes, she looks SO young!
It's very helpful to record family stories when you have the chance. These stories can also help you when you're doing genealogy studies.
I think that we are in a very important time in history. We've reached the end of a 500 year period that began with Luther and now we're breaking into a new millenium with its own challenges and battles. It'll be very interesting to see what events will unfold in our lifetimes.
It's truly amazing that the more you study history, the easier it is to see its patterns and the picture of what the future has in store for us becomes clearer. However, no matter what comes, we must trust in the Lord and in his sovereign hand that guides HIS-story.

Oh, I also meant to say: that's neat about the Mississippi river...we saw a picture recently of a Victorian lady walking on it, and it made us curious to find out when that exactly happened! Wouldn't that be neat if it happened again? ;)
(obviously it didn't THIS year!)
