Cards vs Pirates–September Baseball (Video)

September 2, 2014 - September is finally here and the end of the regular baseball season is only a few weeks away!  Kate and I watched tonight’s game against the Pirates from Busch Stadium.

Before we got to our seats, we checked out the new “Ballpark Village” area that opened this spring.

The grounds crew gets ready for the game

The starting pitcher and catcher take some warmup tosses.  The catcher, Russell Martin later threw a strike when our CF tried to steal.

Andrew McCutchen is the reigning NL MVP and is an amazing athlete who is a former track and field star.

The relievers head to the bullpen

This pitcher made his MLB debut tonight (expanded rosters in Sep) and was forced to wear this pink backpack by the rest of the bullpen.

The Cardinals take their positions

Our ace, Adam Wainwright, on the mound

We sat next to Jacob Faria, a minor league pitcher for the Rays.  He’s teammates and roommates with Kolten Wong’s brother, Kean.  He had a good season in Single-A that ended the day before.

The game started with a groundout that turned into a double play after a video review and the call was overturned at first base.

Matt Holliday up to bat

6-3 groundout

Adam Wainwright tied a career-high by allowing three home runs (you can see the ball hit the purple sign and fall down), but he also got 3 RBIs.  He’s the first Cardinal to do that sine Bob Gibson in 1965.

The rookie call up, Randal Grichuk, made a fantastic catch in right field

Starling Marte was the Pirate’s left fielder and is also an amazing athlete.  He’s got a cannon of an arm.

Where’s the rest of Bourjos’ bat?

Another home run given up that lands in Big Mac Land.  Nothing for Holliday to do, but to look at it.

That’s the last pitch for Waino!

Check out the 3B coach on this foul ball:

Kolten Wong comes in to pinch hit
I’m one of his fans…for a very obvious reason.

Bourjos tries to steal a base, but ran so hard that he came off the bag

Time for the ninth inning

Pitcher, Pat Neshek, has had an incredible season and the story of his comeback is pretty amazing!

Time for the final out!

He has the oddest delivery

And the Cards win over the Pirates 4-6!
